With the embossed white card stock, it is simple and elegant. It looks better in real life, but if you click on it to enlarge the photo you can get a better view. I really love the Rich Razzleberry and Old Olive together.

Yapha <![CDATA[Visual Literacy part 2]]> http://yaphamason.com/blog/?p=2173 2010-03-08T01:05:41Z 2010-03-08T15:21:42Z As part of today’s presentation on teaching Visual Literacy through Digital Scrapbooking, I made up a few scrapbook pages to show different ways teachers could incorporate digital scrapbooking into their courses. I made these pages using Stampin’ Up’s My Digital Studio. At the end of my presentation I will be demoing how to use the software, as well.

If your students need to do a family history report, a family tree, immigration report, homeland report, or report on a historical time period, a heritage style scrapbook would be a great way to present the information. This is an actual picture of my great great grandmother and her three daughters.

Any type of biography would make a great digital scrapbook. You can find a lot of historical photographs and documents online at the American Memory Collection. Below is a scrapbook page about the world famous aviatrix, Bessie Coleman. (It also was created for this week’s Stampin’ Addicts Scrapbook Sketch Challenge.)

The final page I wanted to show you could be used for a book report. How great would it be to have a every student in the class do a two-page spread as a book report, then make them all into one book that students could look through when they wanted to find something to read? I would love to put something like that in my library!

What other ideas do you have for digital scrapbooking in the classroom?

Yapha <![CDATA[Visual Literacy]]> http://yaphamason.com/blog/?p=2167 2010-03-07T21:03:20Z 2010-03-07T21:03:20Z I am presenting tomorrow at the Southern Regional Conference of the California Association of Independent Schools. My topic this year? Teaching Visual Literacy Through Digital Scrapbooking and Storytelling. (I like to weave my obsession with stamping and scrapbooking into all aspects of my life.) Over the next few days, I will share most of that presentation with you. If you would like to read the source material that I used, you can find links to it all on the LibGuide I created. Here are my opening slides, created in My Digital Studio, of course.

One of the main reasons that teaching visual literacy is important is that children believe everything they see. By learning the basics of design, they will see how to manipulate images, as well how to communicate effectively through them. This will open their eyes up to the messages other people are sending via imagery.

I just hosted a swap with fellow Stampin’ Up demonstrators around the country, and I know have 50 (FIFTY!) samples of fabulous items made with fabric cut with dies from the Big Shot. They are truly amazing! If you are in the Los Angeles area and would like to see these works of art in person, let me know. They are truly incredible!

But even if you are not nearby, I have a fabric project for you today. This is another one from the Stampin’ Up website.

Supplies: Corduroy button, Sizzix Big Shot, Scallop Circle #2 Bigz die, Fabric, Needle and thread, Ponytail elastic

Instructions

 1. Die cut 10 large scallop circles using Big Shot and Scallop Circles #2 Bigz die. Cut off eight of the scallops from each scallop circle. Gather together across the flat side about 1/4″ from edge, gathering all ten circles on the same double-thread. Tie off.
 2. Die cut 10 small scallop circles using Big Shot and Scallop Circles #2 Bigz die. Gather the circles across three of the scallops on the same double-thread. Tie off.
 3. To cover Corduroy button, die cut a small scallop circle, then cut off all scallops. Gather the fabric around the edge, place button in the middle, then gather up threads and tie off.
 4. Attach ponytail elastic to back, then sew through all layers of fabric (including fabric around button), so fabric layers are connected to elastic.

When I was in junior high school, a friend of mine and I used to make green tuna sandwiches — I made green tuna, she baked green bread. Nowadays I’m all about the green bagels with green cream cheese! It’s played up big at my school, making it even more fun. Here is a card I am making with the Faculty Card Making Club after school today, and also at another workshop this month. I just love making a shamrock out of heart punches! The stem is made with the Wide Oval Punch. You punch a partial oval, then punch another sliver off it.

Stamps: Define Your Life
Ink: Old Olive
Paper: Old Olive, Chocolate Chip, Whisper White, Sweet Pea Designer Series Paper Pack
Other: 5/16″ Neutral Brads (Chocolate Chip), 1/4″ Chocolate Chip Grosgrain Ribbon, Full Heart Punch, Wide Oval Punch

Hope this month is lucky for you!

If you want to keep him in your prayers that would be appreciated. His Hebrew name is Lazar ben Sarah.

Yapha <![CDATA[Happy Purim!]]> http://yaphamason.com/blog/2010/02/27/happy-purim/ 2010-02-27T15:20:25Z 2010-02-28T14:56:59Z Wow, the holidays this year are coming up early! Purim is usually mid-March, but this year it is the last day pf February. We are off to a Purim carnival, but before we go I have a quick Purim card for you. (Want to learn more about Purim? Visit JewFAQ) One of the reasons that I bought the set Princess Time (other than that my daughter is a princess fanatic) was for the great crown image that I knew would be perfect for Purim cards! I was also really excited to use Rich Razzleberry since it is such a royal color. Here is what I came up with for this year:

Stamps: Princess Time, Calendar Alphabet and Numbers
Ink: Rich Razzleberry, Crushed Curry
Paper: Rich Razzleberry, Crushed Curry, Whisper White, Razzleberry Lemonade Designer Series Paper
Other: Circle Rhinestone Brads (Fire), Rich Razzleberry Polka Dot Grosgrain Ribbon, Crushed Curry Polka Dot Grosgrain Ribbon

I bet your wondering how I stamped that fabulous “Happy Purim” at the bottom. I did it with the magic of Stampin’ Write Markers. I took “Happy P” from the “Happy Birthday Princess” stamp — see below — and then used the Calendar Alphabet and Numbers set to finish the word.

Pretty sneaky, huh?
