Tina, a neighboring demonstrator, was kind enough to invite me over to play with some of her new catalog goodies. One of the great new products that she got was the Beautiful Butterflies Bigz Die. Since it is a Bigz die, it can be used to cut out more than 50 different materials. I just used it on cardstock this time.It looks fantastic with the Flight of the Butterflies set!

Ever since the Top Note Die came out this summer, very clever demonstrators have been turning them into super cute owl bag toppers. When I saw this adorable Valentine’s Day owl bag topper that Krystal made, I knew I had to make one! I was so excited when I even found the Valentine’s Day candy corn. I ended up making two, one with the candy corn and one with Valentine M & Ms. We’ll give these to Eve’s kindergarten teachers, one of which can’t eat chocolate. (The horror!) They were so cute, and quick, and easy, we may make them for some of the other teachers as well.

Here’s a close up of the head.

Stamps: Love You Much
Ink: VersaMark (for embossing the beak)
Cardstock: Pretty in Pink, Pink Pirouette, Whisper White, Riding Hood Red, Basic Black
Accessories: Heart to Heart Punch, 1 3/8″ Circle Punch, 1″ Circle Punch, Top Note Bigz Die, White Embossing Powder, Small Cello Bag

What is black and white and red all over? A Valentine, of course! I love this one for the simplicity of the lines. It just looks so clean to me.

Stamps: A Happy Heart
Ink: Basic Black, Real Red
Paper: Basic Black, Real Red, Whisper White
Accessories: 1/2″ Circle Punch, Scallop Border Punch, Red Gingham Ribbon, Dimensionals

I stamped the tic-tac-toe board twice, once in Basic Black, and once in Real Red. I used the 1/2″ circle punch to punch out the red hearts and used dimensionals to pop them up on the black board.

Here is the final card that we will be making at my Workshop on January 31 in Ashby. (In the area? Email me for details!) It is not a traditional Valentine, in fact it is not really Valentine at all. It could be used as a Valentine, but it could be used for a wide variety of other occasions as well. This card uses the Fresh-Cut Notes and the coordinating Fresh Cuts stamp set. These note cards come already die cut. They are 4″x4″ and coming with matching envelopes. They are too small to be mailed (USPS won’t accept them), but you could always just put them in a regular envelope. Then they go through the mail just fine!

Stamps: Fresh Cuts
Ink: Baja Breeze, Chocolate Chip
Paper: Fresh-Cuts note card, Baja Breeze, Chocolate Chip
Accessories: Chocolate Chip 1/4″ Grosgrain ribbon, 5 Petal Flower Punch, Gold brad

I used the 5 Petal Flower punch to punch out the flower in Baja Breeze. It fits behind the white flower that is part of the card. There is a square of Chocolate Chip card stock that is then glued behind that, showing through the rest of the opening. Quick, easy, & elegant! My favorite kind of card!

Big day in the library world today! The Newbery, Caldecott, and many other awards for children’s and young adult literature were announced today. You can read the full list of winners from Publisher’s Weekly. I’m happy about the choices, and looking forward to reading the ones I have not yet read.

It’s Monday, Newbery Monday, and of course, Mojo Monday! I really like today’s sketch, a square card:

I made mine a 4 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ square card, so it will still fit in a regular envelope. Did you know it costs more to mail a square envelope? The squareness confuses the machines. The great trick I learned is that if you mail a square card in a rectangular envelope it doesn’t cost extra! We are expecting another large snowstorm on Wednesday, so I needed to do something bright and cheerful! I was inspired by this card using the Wow Flowers set.

Stamps: Wow Flowers

Paper: Pacific Point, Pixie Pink, Green Galore, Whisper White
Accessories: Pacific Point Striped Grosgrain Ribbon, Green Galore brad

Wow Flowers is one of the stamp sets that is available in both English and Spanish.

These 3″x3″ cards are quick, easy, and super cute! They could be used as kids’ Valentines, or just as fun notes to stick in a child’s lunch box, backpack , or locker. I just love the facial expressions on the Wild About You animals. They are too cute! You could easily make this card with any of the animals. I just picked these two for an example.

Stamps: Wild About You
Ink: Pacific Point, Tangerine Tango, Kiwi Kiss
Paper: Pacific Point, Tangerine Tango, Kiwi Kiss, Whisper White

What would Valentine’s Day be without chocolate? Quite depressing, no doubt! Here is the second project that we are making at my Valentine’s Day workshop on January 31. It is two peppermint patties, covered with the scallop punch, and packaged in a small cello bag with a Top Note topper. Sound familiar? It is basically the same as the Hanukkah Gelt I made. I love covering the peppermint patties! They come out so cute and yummy!

Here are the two patties:

And this is the finished project:

Stamps: Love You Much, Holidays & Wishes
Ink: Basic Black, Real Red
Paper: Real Red, Whisper White
Accessories: Top Note Bigz Die, Scallop Circle Punch, 1 1/4″ Circle Punch, Heart to Heart Punch, Small Cello Bags

We are thinking of making these as Valentine treats for all of the kids in Eve’s class. We are waiting to hear if there is a “no candy” rule or not.

There will be a couple kids at the Valentine workshop, so Eve is going to be in charge of their projects. She is super excited to be a “junior demonstrator,” and has been hard at work making samples! They will be making some 3″x3″ cards, just the perfect size for giving to classmates! They will be coloring in their creations with Stampin’ Up’s watercolor pencils and blender pens. Although I love, love, love the Watercolor Crayons for my personal use, I think the pencils work better for kids. They still have that great watercolor look!

When I saw the colors for Kristina Werner’s Color Inspiration I had no idea what on earth I could possibly do with them! (I feel like this happens with at least half of the color combos!) And then I remembered the Bugs & Kisses set. I haven’t used it in, like, forever! It is not in the current Idea Book & Catalog, however, you can find it in the online store and on the Dormant List. (Dormant list stamp sets are not featured in the catalog, but are still available for purchase.) This week’s Color Inspiration:

My fun, summery card (which is good because it hasn’t been above freezing in way too long!):

Stamps: Bugs & Kisses
Ink: Basic Black, Green Galore, Real Red, So Saffron
Paper: Green Galor, So Saffron, Basic Black, Whisper White
Accessories: Real Red 1/4″ Grosgrain Ribbon, Top Note Bigz Die, Curly Label Punch, Dimensionals

Eve and I have been having so much fun lately, doing a little bit of stamping in between school and bedtime. I’m glad she doesn’t have any homework yet. She has been waiting (not so patiently) for Kristina Werner to post the new color inspiration. When we saw it was up, we got right to it! This week’s colors were a little tricky — Basic Black, Real Red, Green Galore, So Saffron, and Whisper White.

012009-swatchesHere is what Eve came up with. She has been on a real “All in the Family” kick lately, and has gotten very good at matching up all of the little pieces. (I’ll post more of her All in the Family creations at a later point.) She used the Watercolor Pencils and matched them to the colors the best that she could.

Stamps: All in the Family, Family Phrases
Ink: Basic Black, Green Galore
Paper: Real Red, Basic Black, Whisper White
Accessories: Top Note Bigz Die (she ran it through the Big Shot all by herself!), Watercolor Pencils

Thanks for looking! Eve really appreciated all of your comments last week!
